John K. Skidmore, 87, a long-time resident and businessman in Braxton County, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2024 at his home in Sutton, WV.

He was born May 19, 1936 in Sutton, West Virginia to the late Bailey and Irene Skidmore.

John loved building things and the outdoors. He touched many with his kindness throughout the years. He was an active member of Morrison United Methodist Church and his Christian values were reflected in the way he lived his life. His vision created a thriving business community at the Flatwoods Exit of I-79. He never stopped dreaming about how he could make a difference for the area. He was an avid outdoorsman and was most at home in that arena.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Virginia Skidmore; his daughter, Dr. Teresa Skidmore Flippo Morton; and his sisters, Doris Hopkins and June Hambrick.

He will be lovingly remembered by his three remaining children, Deborah Phillips and husband, David, of Charleston, John Skidmore II, and wife, Michelle, of Sutton, and Gregory Skidmore and wife, Rebecca, also of Exchange; sister, Karen Huffman (David); and brother, Daniel Skidmore (Suzanne).

He is also survived by his seven grandchildren; Duncan Flippo, Grace Skidmore, Sarah Skidmore, Hollis Skidmore, William Skidmore, Margaret Skidmore, and Wylie Skidmore, all who brought great joy to his life.

“For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” Matthew 17:20
