John Richard “Rick” Mitchell, Jr., 75,  of Gassaway passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2023 at WVU Medicine Braxton County Memorial Hospital, Gassaway.

He was born November 28, 1947, in Mt. Vernon, Illinois to the late John Richard Mitchell, Sr. and Donna Jean Holm Mitchell.

Rick worked in the oil and gas industry for several years doing oil field work and later retired from Hope Gas in 2013.  He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1967 to 1975.  Rick was a Vietnam Veteran.  He was involved in many organizations including VFW, Life Member; American Legion Post #33, 22 year member; VVA, Life Member; Masonic Lodge 133 AF & AM; DAV, Life Member.  He enjoyed cooking and grilling, reading, all kinds of word puzzles and woodworking projects.  In the winters he enjoyed traveling to Lake Placid, FL. He had a fun personality and he will truly be missed.

Rick is survived by his wife, Sheila Ann Nutter Mitchell; son, John Richard Mitchell III; daughters, Michelle Mitchell, and Jocelyn Mitchell; sister, Julie Mitchell Wazelle; stepdaughter, Andrea Thompson and husband, Justin; and five grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 1 P.M. Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway with Pastor Rodney England officiating.

Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.

In keeping with Rick’s wishes, he will be cremated and an inurnment will be at a later date in the Donel C. Kinnard Memorial State Veterans Cemetery, Dunbar.
