Matthew E. Ashley, a cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on September 14, 2026, leaving a profound loss in the hearts of those who loved him. Born on October 1, 1972, in Gassaway, West Virginia, Matt was the beloved son of Ronnie Singleton and the late Cathy Hill, and stepson of Rick Ashley.

Matt graduated from Braxton County High School in 1990 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from West Virginia University. He built a successful career in the mining industry, serving in a variety of roles throughout the years. Matt began his career as an engineering technician, working in both underground and surface mining operations. Through hard work, determination, and experience, he advanced to become an underground mine foreman and continued to take on positions of increasing responsibility. At the time of his passing, Matt served as Manager of Birch River Resources.

Matt was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers and WVU Mountaineers fan, a movie theater enthusiast, and had a special love for Disney. He enjoyed watching a good movie on the big screen, camping and relaxing around the campfire while indulging in his share of brownies, sharing stories and laughter, and taking part in the occasional prank. He also treasured quiet time unwinding on his farm with his fur baby Lucy and traveling with family and friends, always cherishing the adventures, laughter, and memories made along the way.

Matt is survived by his father, Ronnie Singleton; his stepfather, Rick Ashley; his siblings, Heather Lloyd and her husband, Brent, Alex Ashley, Rusty Ashley and his wife, Jessica, and Laura Cooper and her husband, Shaun; and his nephew Chris Lloyd and niece Chelsea Lloyd Burgess and husband, George, and his beloved German Shephard, Lucy.

In addition to his mother, Cathy Hill, Matt was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Bryne Lee and Betty Singleton; his maternal grandparents, Earl and Doris Hill; and his step-grandmother, Ruby Ashley.

Although Matt did not have children of his own, he was blessed with a family he loved deeply. He shared a special bond with his nephew, Chris Lloyd, and niece, Chelsea Lloyd Burgess, as well as Jacob Oates, Emily Oates, Hunter Drake, and Hannah Drake Veltre, the children of close family friends whom he loved, supported, and cared for as though they were his own. All lovingly knew him as “Uncle Matt,” a role he cherished and took great pride in. Each held a special place in his heart, and being a part of their lives brought him great joy.

Matt had a heart of gold and a genuine love for the people in his life. His loyalty ran deep, his love was genuine, and when he cared about someone, he cared with his whole heart. Matt will be remembered not only for the person he was, but for the way he made those fortunate enough to be part of his life feel loved, supported, and important leaving a lasting impression that will live on in the hearts and memories of those who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
