Carl Ernest Smith, 76, of Gassaway passed away Tuesday, August 10, 2021 at West Virginia Veterans Nursing Facility, Clarksburg, WV.

He was born in July of 1945 in Gassaway to the late Glen Jake and Opal Stonestreet Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Frank and Billy Jake Smith.

Carl was happiest outdoors. He used to squirrel and deer hunt in his spare time.  You would often find Carl at the local diner in Gassaway with his friends. He was a family man that loved being a husband, father, and grandfather.  If you would happen to find him indoors, he would be watching old westerns or a WVU Football or Basketball game on the television.  He remodeled the house that he lived in several times.  Carl was a happy person who was always smiling.  He was a Christian by faith.  He will be dearly missed.

He will be forever remembered by his wife of 49 years, Dottie Stanley Smith; children, Becki Grimes (Jamie), Beth Smith (Kristy), and Billy Smith (Vickie); grandchildren, Bryanna and Tristan Grimes and Colton and Cody Smith; brothers, Roger Smith (Karen) and Michael Smith (Bev); and several nieces and nephews.

Carl’s visitation will be 5 to 9 P.M. Thursday, August 12, 2021 at Gassaway Baptist Church, Gassaway.

His funeral service will be 1 P.M. Friday, August 13, 2021 at the church with Pastor Rick Garavaglia and Pastor Harold “Shorty” Greenleaf officiating.

Burial with Military Gravesite Rites will be in Cox Cemetery, Birch River.
