Roy Franklin Patterson, “Pa Pa”, 84, of Sutton, WV entered into rest January 7, 2020 at Pittsburgh VA Medical Center after a sudden illness.

He was born February 25, 1935 in Ira, WV a son of the late Claude Henry Patterson and Maggie Marie Radar Patterson.

In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys H. Brown Patterson; grandchildren, Andrew Franklin Patterson and Marcy Lynn Cutlip; great grandson, Henry Graham Thomas; siblings, Ray Henry Patterson, John Ralph Patterson, Otto “Junior” Jarvis and Fred Lee Patterson.

Roy attended Clay County School until his senior year where he graduated from Ansted High School.  He enlisted in the Air Force on March 26, 1952 till February 21, 1956.   He was a Korean War Veteran.  Roy was an Engineer in a large steel plant in Chicago, IL.  He was also a tipple operator and engineer at the Widen Coal Mines.  He worked many trades before, during and after retiring from the coal mines.  The trades he worked included masonry, carpentry, and auto mechanic.  He owned his personal logging company and sawmill on his private property.  Roy always said he was “a jack of all trades and master of none”.  All the work he did helped to provide for his children and to ensure his wife did not have to work.  Roy was an incredible hunter and fisherman.  He enjoyed telling many true fishing and hunting stories to everyone.

Roy will be lovingly remember by his children, Roy D. Patterson (Becky) of Swansea, SC, LaDonna L. Kehoe (Thomas) of Columbia, SC, John P. Patterson of Lexington, SC, Joyce L. Blanton (Terry) of Lexington, SC,  Clarke D. Patterson of Sutton, WV, Katherine D. Patterson of Sutton, Dawn D. Herron (Glen) of Sutton, Sherry J. Moats (Steve) of Sutton, Sheryl J. Stewart (Friday) of Sutton and Denzil R. Patterson of West Columbia, SC; over 30 grandchildren and over 20 great grandchildren; siblings, Icie Marie Taylor and Ruthie Matilda Duffield, both of Harrison, WV.

The grandkids find comfort in knowing that no one has lived a fuller life than Pa Pa.  He truly lived and did the things he loved. Most importantly everyone will remember his love and kindness he gave to all.  His big smile will be his lasting legacy.  His face would light up everytime he saw any or all of his children, grandchildren or great grandchildren.  Pa Pa enjoyed every minute of his life with the ones he loved.  Rest in Peace.

Service will be 2 P.M. Sunday, January 12, 2020 at Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway with Reverend Ray Teets officiating.  Interment with military graveside rites will be in the Gray Cemetery, Harrison, WV.
