Jerry Alan Gunter, 86, of Gassaway passed away on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at home surrounded by his family.

He was born in Gassaway on April 1, 1940, to the late Aubrey Emory Gunter and Genevive Lee Hyer Gunter.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Rose Catherine Keener Gunter; brothers, Ronald “Butch” Gunter and Kenneth Gunter; and sisters, Marjorie McLaughlin and Violet Gunter.

Jerry graduated from Gassaway High School in 1958. He then joined the National Guard, followed by active duty in the U.S. Army serving his country. He later graduated from the Jefferson School of Commerce in Fredericksburg, VA. He worked for over 40 years as a business manager for various bridge construction contractors throughout West Virginia, eventually retiring from Bilco Construction in 2003.

Jerry actively enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, including his many canine companions over the years, fellowship and worship as a long-term member of Gassaway United Methodist Church, and as an avid sports fan and outdoorsman. As a lifelong resident of Gassaway, Jerry served his community by volunteering through the church and with organizations such as local food banks, youth sports, and various others. He will be greatly missed.

Left to cherish his memories are his son, Jeffrey (Luella) of Morgantown, WV, grandchildren Avery, Anna, and Emma; son, Jay of Charleston, WV, grandchildren Logan and Ryan; son, Jonathan of Winston-Salem, NC, granddaughter Lauren Mao (Vince) of Greenville, SC, great grandchildren Conner and George, son, Joel (Kelli) of Clemmons, NC, grandchildren Noah and Brooklyn; brother, David Gunter (Wilma) of Gassaway, WV; several nieces and nephews; and several friends in Gassaway.

His funeral will be held at 12 Noon on Thursday, April 16, 2026, at Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway with Reverend Jim Burrough officiating. Friends and family may visit an hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Otter Cemetery, Gassaway.
