Memories of My Cousin Sue Robinson I first met my cousin Sue the summer of 1946. WWII was finally over, gas was available and my parents, Fred and Pearl Hunt, couldn’t wait any longer to see their Southern and East Coast relatives. They piled our family of seven which included five kids (Nan, John, Charlotte, Christine & Freddy) into our well-worn 1936 Chev and drove across the country. Before the car reached the Robinson’s backyard steps, Sue let out a holler and came running out to meet us! She knew all our names and couldn’t wait to show us where we’d all sleep. It was a little bit like John Denver’s song, “Grandma’s Feather Bed”. In the early 1950’s Sue and her parents drove cross country to Monroe Washington to visit us. We sometimes had a hard time understanding each other (this was before TV and accents were much more pronounced). No matter what we did: packing a picnic, an outing on a ferry boat, or picking berries … Sue was enthusiastic and her laughter contagious. I made three trips with family members to visit Aunt Jessie and Sue in Gassaway. You could tell Sue knew her neighbors by name and they knew her. “Howdies and smiles” were exchanged wherever she went. Sue knew how to cook and made sure I came home with recipes I still treasure. Even though we didn’t see each other often, we kept in touch at Christmas time and through occasional phone calls. When Sue had to give up walking, she still found a way to exercise by pedaling for all she was worth on an exercise bike! Sue I will miss your zest for life, joyful spirit and calling you on your birthday. Your cousin, Christine Hunt McCroskey
