Esther Jane Mitchell Hacker, 93, of Chapel, entered into her heavenly home on Wednesday, November 27, 2024, after a brief stay in the hospital at WVU Medicine United Hospital Center, Bridgeport, WV.

She was born on March 7, 1931, in Belfont, WV to the late Ocie DeBarr Mitchell, who died during childbirth, and Vassie Mitchell. She was raised by her grandparents, Nancy Nutt DeBarr and John D. DeBarr.

In addition to her parents and her grandparents, she was preceded in death by her infant sons, Robert Gaylord Hacker and Ira Clifford Hacker; and her husband, Ira Hacker, Jr.

After she finished her secondary education, she married Ira and had a home and farm together. Esther worked hard on the farm, taking care of her milkcow and chickens and other duties that needed tended to. Esther raised a huge vegetable garden and canned and cooked from the harvest. She made the “meanest” pan of biscuits. She enjoyed crocheting and quilting in her spare time. She loved spending time with her family.

Left to cherish her memories are her daughter, Nancy Massengill and husband, Wayland, of Shallotte, NC; granddaughter, Janet Smith of Maiden,NC; two bonus grandchildren, Trey Massengill of Stafford, VA and Katherine Massengill of Columbia, SC; and two great grandchildren and one on the way.

Her visitation will be 6 to 8 P.M. Friday, November 29, 2024, at Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway, WV.

Esther’s graveside will be 11 A.M. Saturday, November 30, 2024, at Fairview Cemetery, Gassaway with Reverend Linn Schiefer.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to an Alzheimer’s Research or Veteran’s organization of your choice.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff at Clarksburg Healthcare Center and the staff in the Emergency Room and the 6th floor at United Hospital Center.
