Elaine Ruth “Ruthie” Cassell, 61, of Sutton passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2023, with her cousin, Pat, by her side, at CAMC Memorial, Charleston, WV after a short illness. She was born in Gassaway on February 17, 1962, to Harry Dorn Nettles of Gassaway and the late Sharon Rose Given Nettles. In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her sister, Vickie Lynn Nettles. Ruthie was a secretary for several companies including Nettles Equipment at Servia and Goldfarb Lighting Company in Charleston. She enjoyed working around her father’s garage with him. She and her dad also took short trips in his Ranchero. Her favorite pastime was talking on her cell and house phones. One of the good memories that was shared by her family was that occasionally her talking on the phone would interfere with her dad watching the TV, but her cousin, Pat, figured out how to handle that. He would keep turning the volume up louder and louder until she went to her bedroom to talk. Another positive memory of her was at the end of her life. She would see Pat when he came to the hospital and would say, “Pat, are you listening? “or “Pat, are you paying attention to what I’m saying?” or “Pat, did you hear what I said?” Her family was thankful that she could still remember everyone in her last few days. She liked to come to town in her car. She also enjoyed watching all kinds of shows on the television. In her last few months, she lived at her cousin’s house, and she would watch the horses on his farm. She loved to visit with her cousin, Anita, who came to see her every day. Left to cherish her memories are her father, Harry Dorn Nettles and his companion of 40 plus years, Velma James; and her close cousins, Patrick Nettles, Brent Nettles, and Anita Miller. Ruthie’s funeral will be held 1 P.M. Saturday, December 9, 2023, at Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway with the Reverend Ray Teets officiating. Burial will follow in the Nettles Family Cemetery, Elmira. Her visitation for family and friends will be two hours prior to the service at the funeral home.
