Robert Lee “Bob” Tinney, 82, passed away on Friday, October 28, 2022, at his son’s home on the Tinney Family Farm on Bug Ridge Road in Sutton. He was born September 22, 1940, in Sutton to the late Creed W. Tinney and Gladys May Johnson Tinney. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Lou Robinson Tinney. Bob graduated from high school and headed to the military. He was a U.S. Army Special Forces Veteran of the Vietnam War. He often remembered his Special Forces Creed, “DE OPPRESSO LIBER”, which in Latin means “To free the oppressed”. He shared this motto with his fellow Special Forces throughout history and its meaning became ingrained into his daily life. His servant attitude was also displayed in his civic activities as he was a long-time member with the Sutton Volunteer Fire Department. Bob worked and retired in the coal mining industry as a coal miner and driller operator. He is survived by his two sons, Shannon Tinney and wife, Wendy, of Fairmont, WV, and Chad Tinney and partner, Lori Phillips, of Sutton; two daughters, Laura Tinney of Maidsville, WV and Lori Toothman and husband, Dean, of Barrackville, WV; six grandchildren; brother, Creed Farrell Tinney of Wadsworth, OH; sister, Janet Carol Cottrill of Elgin, OK; and numerous nephews and nieces.
