Norman “Sonny” Hashman

Norman “Sonny” Hashman, 89, of Elyria, Ohio, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 25, at his new residence on Chapel Road in West Virginia following a brief illness. He was surrounded by the love and care of family, ensuring he was not alone in his final moments. He was born at home in Perkins, West Virginia, on July 7, 1937, to the late Lon and Hettie (Keener) Hashman and was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Sonny honorably served his country in the United States Army from 1961 to 1963 and was stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Following his military service, he made his home in Elyria, Ohio, where he lived from 1963 until July 6, 2026, when he returned home to West Virginia. He was employed by Ford Motor Company in Lorain, Ohio, retiring in 1992 after 33 years of dedicated service. On June 17, 1961, Sonny married the love of his life, Judith “Judy” (Sumpter) Hashman. They shared nearly 60 years of marriage before Judy preceded him in death on September 3, 2020. Their only child, Libby A. Hashman Bones, also preceded him in death on August 27, 2024. Sonny enjoyed rustic camping, collecting and restoring antique cars, and sharing his ingenuity and practical knowledge with younger generations. He was a Christian by faith and will be remembered for his strong work ethic, resourcefulness, and willingness to help others. In addition to his parents, wife, and daughter, Sonny was preceded in death by special friends, Lois James and Charles Conrad; brothers, Gerald Hashman and Darrill Hashman; and sisters, Ilene Allen, Maxine Burns, and Joy Livermore. He is survived by his grandsons, Dustin (Christin) Bones of Bonita Springs, Florida, and Travis (Becca) Bones of Blackwell, Texas; his great-grandchildren, Brentley and Jaxson Bones of Bonita Springs, Florida, and Dakota, Colton, Brodie, Auggie, and Elanor Bones of Blackwell, Texas; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. Sonny’s presence will be deeply missed, and the memories he created will remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to his niece, Karen Fleming, and his friend, Roger Tenney, for the compassion, friendship, and care they provided, allowing him to remain independent until his final days and surrounding him with love and support at the end of his life.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 12, at 12:00 noon at Roach Funeral Home in Gassaway, West Virginia. Friends will be received from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Graveside services will be held at Nesbett Cemetery in Grafton, Ohio, on Thursday, August 13, at 11:00 a.m.
