Earl Waitman “Bud” Underwood, Jr., 87, of Gassaway passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 10, 2025, surrounded by his family.

He was born on January 22, 1938, in Frametown, WV to the late Earl Waitman Underwood, Sr. and Emma Rebecca Hall Underwood.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Ann Underwood; brothers, Harry and William Underwood; sisters, Margaret Mizell, Kathryn Lampe, and Becky Gunter.

Bud was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was an honest and hardworking businessman, working for and retiring after 38 years of service for Nationwide Insurance in Gassaway. He enjoyed going to church and was a longtime member of First Southern Baptist in Sutton. His jovial smile, kindness and fun personality will be missed by all who knew him.

Left to cherish his memories are his daughter, Vicki Carr and husband, Brad, of Gassaway; grandchildren, Aaron Lemon and wife, Mandy of San Antonio, Texas, and Brandon Lemon and wife, Nicole, Asheville, North Carolina; and great grandchildren, Keller Lemon, Maddox and Nash Lemon and Eleanor Lemon; and several nieces and nephews.

Bud’s visitation will be from noon to 2 P.M. Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at Roach Funeral Home, Gassaway with Pastor Jeffrey Kelley officiating.

His graveside service will follow at 2:30 P.M. at Sugar Creek Cemetery, Gassaway.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to WV Caring, P.O. Box 760, Arthurdale, WV 26520.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff, nurses and aides at WV Caring, and to Bud’s wonderful caregiver, Susan McKenzie.
