Stephen William Smith, 69, of Gassaway went home to be with Jesus on Friday, October 3, 2025, after a brief and valiant battle with pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by his family.

He was born in Avon-by-the-Sea, New Jersey on July 13, 1956, to the late Mervin and Jean Cutler Smith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Bruce Smith and Lenny Smith; and niece, Jennifer Smith.

Steve had a remarkable gift of humor. Even in the hardest times when he carried his own burdens, he brought light and laughter to everyone around him. His humor was not just a way to make people laugh: it was his way to bring people together, to ease their worries, and to remind us all to find joy where we can. He was a mentor, friend, and inspiration to many. He spent the last decade teaching and encouraging students in Braxton County Schools.

Left to cherish his memories are the love of his life and wife of 17 years, Alice Smith; children, Kevin Smith of Virginia, Gregory Smith and wife, Amber, of Frametown; Jessica whom he lovingly referred to as “Sweet Pea” and husband, Shannon Morris, of Virginia; Elyse and husband, Jonik Kopp, of California; Dr. James Dwight Pierson of Alaska, Shyloh and husband, Jared Lusk, of Mt. Lookout; Hannah and husband, Joe Mireles, of Pennsylvania; and Adam Smith of Gassaway; grandchildren, Lexie, Lilly, Savannah, Anthony, Bella, Noah, Emmett, Jane, Joseph and Reagan; brother, Mervin “Bud” Smith, Jr. and wife, Sherry, of New Jersey; and several nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Steve’s wishes, he will be cremated.

A Celebration of Life Service will be 2 P.M. Saturday, October 11, 2025, at Roach Funeral Home, 708 Braxton Street, Gassaway.

Family and friends may come together to celebrate Steve’s life two hours prior to his service on Saturday at the funeral home.
