Walter Glen “Doc” Schoolcraft, age 88, slipped quietly from this life on Sunday, July 3, at his home at Tague with his devoted wife of 63 years by his side. Doc was born May 17, 1928 in Rosedale, the son of Alex and Lydia Jenkins Schoolcraft.

He served honorably in the Army. He retired after 23 years of service from General Motors in Ohio and returned to his beloved West Virginia. He was a skilled carpenter who built beautiful heirloom furniture. Doc loved to help others and did so at every opportunity. He enjoyed helping out at the Rosedale Senior Center. He especially enjoyed helping them make apple butter.

He was a kind, gentle man who loved his family dearly. He opened his heart to nieces and nephews who looked to him after losing their own parents. He opened his home to family each July to host the Schoolcraft reunion, a tradition of more than 60 years. It was on the morning of this reunion that he passed away, leaving behind many who loved him for a greater reunion in heaven.

He is survived by his loving wife, Betty Turner Schoolcraft, whom he married March 23, 1953; his beloved son, David; his sister, Belle Boone; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Annie Stout; his brothers, Foster, Forest, Robert, Harper, Hartsel, and Arthur; and half-brothers, Ralph Schoolcraft and Donnie Jenkins.
